Casino Hotels

Eight Canadian resorts, written up here as hotels. The entries cover the buildings, the halls where concerts are held, the restaurants, the pools and spas, and the ground around each one. The first is a few minutes' walk from our front door; the other seven are for weekends away.

The rooms given over to games of chance are not described, rated or compared anywhere on this page. A note on age limits and support lines follows the entries.

Fallsview Casino Resort tower above the gorge
The Fallsview tower from the park below.

Fallsview Casino Resort

Niagara Falls, Ontario

Our nearest neighbour. Fallsview sits on the same hillside as the tower, and residents use its theatre, its restaurants and its shops as an extension of the boulevard.

The building

Because the complex is cut into the slope, its front doors open at different heights and long indoor galleries stitch the levels together. A theatre for touring acts, a spa, a run of restaurants from a food court to a dining room with a view, a row of shops and an indoor pool fill the public levels; the hotel rooms rise in a tower on top. The higher rooms look straight down the gorge to the Horseshoe Falls. This entry covers those public parts of the building and nothing else.

Around it

The resort fronts Fallsview Boulevard, four hundred metres from the brink of the Horseshoe Falls and the park that lines the gorge. The incline railway down to the park starts beside it, and Clifton Hill is a quarter of an hour's walk to the north. The railway station and the Rainbow Bridge crossing lie beyond that.

Exposition pavilions of the Montréal Casino on Île Notre-Dame
The former exposition pavilions on Île Notre-Dame.

Montréal Casino & Hotel

Île Notre-Dame, Montréal, Québec

The complex occupies two pavilions left over from the 1967 world exposition on an island in the Saint Lawrence, with accommodation set beside them.

The building

The pavilions keep their exposition geometry: tilted glass walls, ramps that spiral between floors and open galleries looking down into the atrium. The public levels hold a cabaret room, several restaurants ranging from a buffet to a formal dining room, bars and rooms for private functions, while the hotel rooms are grouped in their own wing. Terraces face west across the water to the downtown skyline. Only these public spaces are described here.

Around it

Île Notre-Dame was built for the exposition and is reached by the Jean-Drapeau metro station or by bridge. The island is mostly park, with a rowing basin, gardens, a beach in summer and the geodesic Biosphère on the neighbouring island. Downtown Montréal is a few minutes north by metro; Old Montréal and the port lie across the water.

River Rock Casino Resort and marina on the Fraser River
The resort and its marina on the Fraser River.

River Rock Casino Resort

Richmond, British Columbia

A hotel, a concert hall and a cluster of restaurants stand together on the north arm of the Fraser River, with a marina at the water's edge.

The building

The buildings follow the riverbank in a long line. A hotel tower of rooms and suites, a theatre used for concerts and comedy, a spa, an indoor pool and a set of restaurants share one roof, and a boardwalk runs along the marina on the river side. The Canada Line rapid-transit station is at the front door, so the resort works as a base for the city without a car. This entry covers the hotel, hall, restaurants and grounds only.

Around it

Richmond is flat delta land with dyke paths along the river, Asian food markets a short ride away and the old cannery village of Steveston to the south-west. Vancouver International Airport is minutes away by road or rail, and central Vancouver is about twenty-five minutes on the Canada Line.

Low buildings of Casino Rama Resort among trees
The low-rise resort near Lake Couchiching.

Casino Rama Resort

Rama, Ontario

The resort stands on the lands of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, an hour and a half north of Toronto, with a hotel and an entertainment hall spread across a wooded site.

The building

Rather than a tower, Rama is a set of low buildings joined by covered internal streets. There is a hotel with rooms and suites, an entertainment centre for concerts, a spa, an indoor pool, meeting rooms and a range of restaurants and cafés. Art by Indigenous artists is displayed through the public areas, and the architecture borrows from the roundhouse and the lodge. As with every entry here, only these public parts are described.

Around it

The site lies on the eastern shore of Lake Couchiching, north of Orillia. Orillia itself has a waterfront, a main street of shops and a bus link; the Severn waterway and the cottage country of Muskoka begin a little further north. Roads lead down to the lakeshore for boating and, in winter, ice fishing.

Caesars Windsor towers on the Detroit River
The two hotel towers seen from the riverfront path.

Caesars Windsor

Windsor, Ontario

Two hotel towers and a large concert hall stand on the Canadian bank of the Detroit River, facing the skyline of Detroit across the water.

The building

The complex has two hotel towers of different heights, both with rooms that look either over the river to Detroit or back across Windsor. Between them are the Colosseum, a theatre of about five thousand seats used for touring concerts and shows, a spa, an indoor pool, a food court and several restaurants including a steakhouse and a buffet. Meeting and banquet rooms take a whole floor. This entry describes the hotels, the theatre, the restaurants and the grounds only.

Around it

The resort stands at the eastern end of Windsor's downtown, beside the riverfront park and cycle path that run for several kilometres along the Detroit River. The tunnel and the Ambassador Bridge to the United States are both close; the Via Rail station is a short taxi ride east. Pelee Island and the Lake Erie shore are an hour to the south-east.

Hilton Lac-Leamy beside the lake in Gatineau
The hotel on the shore of Lac Leamy.

Hilton Lac-Leamy

Gatineau, Québec

A lakeside hotel on the Québec side of the Ottawa River, linked to the Lac-Leamy resort next door and ten minutes from Parliament Hill.

The building

The hotel is a curved tower on the shore of a small lake, with rooms facing either the water or the Gatineau hills. It has indoor and outdoor pools, a spa, a fitness room and several restaurants and bars, and it connects by a covered walkway to the resort's theatre, which stages musicals and concerts. Terraces and a marina open onto the lake. Only the hotel, the theatre, the restaurants and the grounds are covered here.

Around it

Lac Leamy sits in a park with walking and cycling paths that follow the Gatineau River down to the Ottawa. The Canadian Museum of History is a few minutes away on the riverbank, and the bridges to central Ottawa, with Parliament, the ByWard Market and the Rideau Canal, are a short drive or bus ride. Gatineau Park, with its hills, lakes and ski trails, begins to the north.

Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto beside Woodbine Racetrack
The hotel block beside the racetrack.

Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto

Etobicoke, Toronto, Ontario

The newest of the eight, opened in 2023 on the grounds of Woodbine Racetrack in the north-west of Toronto, close to the junction of two motorways.

The building

The resort is a single large complex with a hotel of about four hundred rooms on eleven floors, set along the track so that the rooms on that side look out over the turf course. A live-performance hall for around five thousand people, a wellness centre with an indoor pool, a sauna and a steam room, and a group of restaurants and bars open off a central lobby. The racetrack's own grandstand and paddock adjoin the site. This entry covers the hotel, the hall, the restaurants and the racecourse only.

Around it

The site lies near the meeting of Highways 401 and 427, about a quarter of an hour from Toronto Pearson airport and half an hour from downtown by road. The Humber River valley and its trails run a little to the east, and the shops and restaurants of Rexdale and Etobicoke are nearby. Woodbine's racing season runs from spring to late autumn.

River Cree Resort on the western edge of Edmonton
The resort on Enoch Cree Nation land, west of Edmonton.

River Cree Resort

Enoch, Alberta

A hotel and event centre on the lands of the Enoch Cree Nation, at the western edge of Edmonton, known as much for its ice rinks as for its rooms.

The building

The resort pairs a mid-rise hotel run under the Marriott name with a low entertainment building. Inside are a hall used for concerts and boxing, two full-size ice rinks that host hockey and public skating, a fitness room, a pool, and restaurants that include a steakhouse, a sports bar and a café. The design draws on Cree motifs throughout the public spaces. Only these parts of the resort are described here.

Around it

The site stands on the prairie just beyond Edmonton's western ring road, a few minutes from West Edmonton Mall and about twenty minutes from the city centre. The North Saskatchewan River valley, with its long chain of parks and trails, is close by. Edmonton International Airport is roughly forty minutes to the south, and the Rocky Mountains at Jasper are four hours west.

This page is descriptive and independent. It gathers published information about eight buildings in Canada and their public rooms; details change, and any of them should be checked with the resort concerned. Niagara Luxury Apartments has no connection with the resorts named here, sells nothing on their behalf and takes no bookings for them. The concierge desk can help residents with theatre tickets for Fallsview only.

Entry to the licensed areas of these resorts is limited by age: nineteen and over in Ontario and British Columbia, eighteen and over in Québec and Alberta. Gambling is not a way to earn money. Support is available in Ontario from ConnexOntario on 1-866-531-2600, in Québec on 1-800-461-0140, in British Columbia on 1-888-795-6111 and in Alberta on 1-866-332-2322.
